From Crisis to Care: A Legacy of Compassion
In the years following the fall of the communist regime during the Romanian Revolution of 1989, the world began to discover a hidden humanitarian crisis in Romania. Thousands of children — many living with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or HIV/AIDS — had been abandoned, stigmatized, or hidden away in overcrowded state institutions.
Many of these children were raised in extremely difficult conditions, often deprived of proper medical care, education, emotional support, and the dignity every child deserves. At the time, children with disabilities were frequently marginalized and isolated from society, with little access to specialized care or opportunities to thrive.
It was in this moment of urgent need that Children in Distress Romania was founded. Driven by compassion and a belief that every child deserves a chance at a dignified life, the organization began providing care, support, and hope to some of the most vulnerable children in the country
Over the past 35 years, Children in Distress Romania has worked tirelessly to transform lives — creating safe environments for children living with HIV/AIDS, developing therapy programs for children with autism and neurological conditions, supporting education for children at risk of school dropout, and training professionals to better support children with special needs.
The impact of this work has been profound:
• 1,200 children and young people living with HIV/AIDS supported in safe, family-like environments
• 470 children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder receiving specialized therapy
• 180 children with severe neurological conditions receiving long-term care
• 1,726 children supported through therapy and educational programs
• 300 educators and professionals trained to work with children with special educational needs
• 1,675 children at risk of school dropout supported to continue their education
• 2,650,000 care packages delivered to vulnerable children and families
Today, a new chapter is beginning.
Through American Friends of Children in Distress Romania, supporters in the United States can now join this mission — helping expand programs, strengthen communities, and ensure that vulnerable children continue to receive the care and opportunities they deserve.
Together, we are not only honoring a legacy that began in response to a humanitarian crisis — we are building a future where every child is seen, supported, and given the chance to thrive.
Join us in continuing this mission of compassion and hope.
